Founded in 1923 in the complex of the residences reserved for the Clergy of the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, the Capitular Museum provides a unique look at the underground reaches of Perugia, with archaeological finds that belonged to the acropolis from the Etruscan and Roman era in addition to ruins from 15th-century buildings.

The collection includes paintings and sculptures from the cathedral and the diocese that attest to the intense artistic activity at the time. Some of the collection's most interesting works include the Altar-Piece of Sant'Onofrio (1484) by Luca Signorelli, a marble slab depicting the Creation of Eve from the 12th century, works from the school of Arnolfo di Cambio and Giovanni Pisano, paintings by Agnolo Gaddi, Meo da Siena and artists from the Umbrian Renaissance, including Benedetto Bonfigli and Bartolomeo Caporali, and pieces from the school of Perugino. The collection is also enriched by a precious and rare display of illuminated manuscripts that span from the 6th to the 17th century  (The Missal of San Giovanni d'Acri, 13th century) and by two sections dedicated to ecclesiastic furnishings and liturgical paraments (The Wall Hanging of Cardinal Armellini).
