Corso Vannucci, 15
In the original nucleus of Palazzo dei Priori, in two dwellings that open up onto the city's main street, Corso Vannucci, the offices of the Medieval Merchant's Guild stand in their original form from the late 14th century.
A rare example of decorative inlaid wood panelling, with a minimal use of gold and colour, the Nordic influence is revealed in the choice of wood while the geometric orientation hints to Eastern origins. At the time, wood was commonly used in the furnishings of religious buildings - especially choir stalls and sacristies - and rarely used in secular buildings. However, here wood was used extensively throughout the ceilings and walls to create a refined and homogeneous environment. The warm tones of the various woods create the atmosphere of an autumn forest. The interiors have been painstakingly preserved over the years due to the organization's continuity over time (the Guild has been a scrupulous custodian of the local artistic heritage and traditions). This historic institution, which consistently played an important role over the centuries, most likely chose wood decorations over the more commonly used frescoes, not merely for aesthetic reasons. The choice of wood was a more precious alternative to wall paintings and an elegant way to assert their taste, wealth and power.
