MUSEUM CENTRE
Via Marzia, Piazza Italia, Via Masi, V.le Indipendenza
Inside the Rocca Paolina Fortress, the Museum Centre satisfies the needs of tourists and local residents alike, where they can learn about the city's artistic and historic heritage that extends throughout the historic city centre and surrounding territory.
Rocca Paolina and the city is the title of an evocative exhibition, rich with documented material, on view in the spaces adjacent to the Marzia Gate. Visitors can walk through this monument to discover why it has played such an important role in the city's life for centuries. The fortress, built between 1540 and 1543, was commissioned by Pope Paolo Farnese III, from whom it took its name "Paolina". Designed by Antonio da Sangallo, the fortress was built on top of an entire Medieval district. For many years it symbolized the dominion of the Papal State. But following the renovation work performed over the last few decades, the fortress has "reconciled" with the city, becoming an important social and cultural centre that serves as a link between the past and the future.
