IV November Square - entrance at Cathedral's upper cloister

THE CAPITULAR MUSEUM OF S. LAWRENCE'S CATHEDRAL. ARCHAEOLOGICAL AREA

During the restructuration of the Canoniche ensemble, was put attention also to the cloister's lower level than the current. It was discovered the confirmation of the uninterrupted continuity of use of Perugia' area, since the Etruscan Age. In fact, were discovered wide sections of etruscan walling (VI-V cent. B.C.), which had the dual function to hold the old acropolis town, besides to form one of the first element of a cult building. The travertine blocks, which constitute this walling, have a square appearance and they are put one above the other without using mortar. Various fragments of architectural decorations are also emerged like capitals, marbled frames of Roman Age, that began for Perugia with the designation of a console of the city in the II century B.C. and it carried out with the assignment of the City Hall's status to Perugia.

The excavations revealed also other important finds like, for examples, the remains of an old kiln, used for the edification of the Cathedral during the late Middle Age.
